I was talking with a colleague about breakfast ideas, and she said to me that yoghurt and fruit wouldn’t appeal to her, but that she always has breakfast.
“…because it’s the most important meal of the day!”
I totally agree, but I wondered if she understood why breakfast is so important, or what happens when she misses breakfast, or chooses something like ‘diet cereal’ over oatmeal or eggs.
Breakfast time as a kid…
I’ve always eaten breakfast, it was part of my day, my dad was a stay at home parent, so he usually made me oatmeal or toast. I always hated cereal, I’d make my parents buy a box and then it would sit in the cupboard and go stale. My obsession with croissants (hello trigger food) started as a kid, I also remember eating crumpets with A LOT of peanut butter, they were usually carbohydrate based.
So surely if breakfast is a great strategy for dieting, and I have always eaten breakfast, I shouldn’t struggle with my weight?
It’s about what is on your plate…
As you all know I have struggled with my weight, my entire life. Just eating breakfast does not have fat loss powers, no food can do this, no matter what we are told! It is about what you put in your body and how you move your body that actually helps you manage your physique.
So whilst I totally agree breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I also think it is the most abused meal.
If you are going to skip a meal, its usually breakfast.
You are running late, you have got a early meeting, the kids need to be at school – it’s just chaos, so you grab your coffee and run.
You are on a new diet and you have got limited calories, so you choose a low calorie (normally sugar laden) product, maybe a cereal bar, Special K or those ‘breakfast biscuits’ or again you skip the meal…savings the calories for later.
What I have found is that when you skip breakfast, your feeling of hunger is stronger, by mid morning you haven’t eaten for at least 10 hours and now we grab the quickest, easiest thing that will satisfy this feeling.
How often do we write the whole day off after this? ‘I’ll start again tomorrow…’
You can see how breakfast can have a massive impact on your day, your emotions and food choices, this is why I believe it is the most important meal of your day.
