He didn’t mean to…

This morning my mum and I were talking about the crazy shit we get ourselves into with food. You know, hiding it from loved ones or holding onto certain situations from our childhood which still cause upset to this day.

My mum said she remembers being told ‘you are doing well, but…’ and my GG would rub her stomach – as if to say ‘but this is still an issue!’. My mum explained that as a child when she was unwell she was ‘rewarded’ with a meal out with her father. At Easter and Christmas there would be cakes and chocolates in the house, as they became more wealthy the food became bigger and more available…yet she was still told she was overweight.

The phrase that will always upset me is “your eyes are bigger than your stomach…”

I hate it. I have had that phrase directed at me numerous times, mostly as a child, and as I got older when I heard it, it would upset me. I tried to find the origin and its been around for over 200 years, but it was originally used to refer to people who were greedy with money, not food.

As much as it pains me to admit it, it was my dad who used to use this phrase. I know he was never trying to upset me, and that he just wanted me to be healthy and happy.

Well I can tell you daddy that you got your wish, I am happy and very healthy. As I approach my 29th birthday I am the healthiest I have ever been.

From now on if I ever hear anyone say “your eyes are bigger than your stomach” I will ask them if they want to measure them! ; -)
