Yikes! I don’t want you become another statistic, and because you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down, I’m going to share with you:
The 3 Reasons why You’re Overwhelmed By Your Planner
You don’t know what kind of planner you are!
This girl LOVES beautifully curated images of planners, desks and dream offices #swoon but I used to get so caught up in what my planner looked like, I’d forget to actually strategically do any planning.
Don’t get so distracted by the washi tape and coloured markers that you forget to actually DO the planning! What good is a beautiful planner, if you’re not actually using it to make your dreams a reality and be a raging success?
If, like me, you are creative and love a blank canvas to make your own then I suggest choosing a planner like this one from Passion Planner. Their planners are spacious, full of ideas, and they offer a ton of downloads and video tutorials on how to make your planner your own. These planners are undated, so be ready to put your own touch to each day, week and month!
However, if you want to minimise time spent crafting and just get straight to the nitty gritty of planning then I suggest choosing something which is already beautiful and full of inspiration, Erin Condren is my favourite! You can choose from hundreds of style, designs and you can even personalise it with your own words, name or images.
Once you’ve chosen your planner, you need to think about what kind of planner you are:
- Do you intend to only use this planner, or are you going to use an online scheduler too?
- How much space you need on each page will depend on how many appointments you normally have in your day/week/month.
- Are you planning for one specific goal, e.g. weight loss, blogging or business?
You don’t want to spend your hard earned $$$ on a planner only to find it doesn’t suit your needs. So make sure you take the time to pick out a planner that matches your planning personality and you’ll be much more likely to use it and achieve your goals!
You’re overlooking the reason why planning is so great!
Don’t just think of your planner as a datebook, when used correctly it will become your #1 tool for productivity this year! No matter your goal, writing it down and using a planner to create strategy will improve your chances of achieving by 42%.
The biggest trap I see people falling into when it comes to planning and prioritising is that they are ONLY focused on the end game – the big result!
So, let’s imagine….
- Your body is lighter and leaner
- You’re able to pay off that outstanding debt
- You quit your 9-5 to become a solopreneur
- You cross the finish line of your first marathon
Whilst you won’t wake up tomorrow and find any of these things have magically happened, what you can choose to do is take daily action. You have the opportunity to learn in every moment, so find a goal you want to get behind, and plan out your year with bite sized goals to help you:
- Stay motivated
- Increase consistency
- Make progress
Don’t disregard that what you do today, tomorrow and next week gets you closer to your goals.
You’re trying to schedule waaaaaay to much!
Trust me when I tell you that trying to schedule every moment of your day is not going to work, yes I have indeed tried this. During the moments of overwhelm and stress, when nothing seemed to be working, I decided to take my planning to the next [and slightly crazy] level. I sat and planned out every moment, of everyday including showers and meals.
I’m cringing at the thought of it, because it backfired beyond belief and I was left feeling more overwhelmed, stressed and now I could add my dear old friend guilt to the party!
You do not need to schedule that much into your day.
Start by adding your time scheduled appointments and meetings, these are the most important. Then be realistic with the remaining time, and #girlboss I am talking to YOU!
Consider the environment in which you work best, personally, I have to schedule my workouts like a meeting so that they actually happen, and I do this at the BEST times for myself and my business.
You are the most important factor in your goals and planning, so carefully consider what works well for you, create an environment which minimises stress and maximises your results in every aspect of your life.
